Painting and Drawing study

Ross Retrato Study, 20x16in, o/c, 2009
Study, charcoal on paper, 2010
Finished Painting and drawing study side by side. The painting is from 2009 and the drawing was done in 2010. I often revisit old reference photos and draw each day before painting.I consider doing multiple paintings of the same person but with a different approach.

Many of my paintings start with realistic charcoal studies. Drawing helps me get to know the realistic characteristics of the people I paint. During this process, I think about my connection to the person and how I want to translate those thoughts into a painting. This is a friend of mine Ross Bowns who is an artist in Northern California.

Dedos in cuarto Study, 12x9in, oil on duralar

"Paintings and sculpture will take over the Julie Nester Gallery when "Figurative Perspectives," featuring the works of Daniel Ochoa and Tor Archer, starts its run Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 5:30 p.m..Both are influenced by their artistic upbringing.
While Ochoa has followed a different path from his formative training, Tor Archer has embraced his early influences and expanded on them."

Figurative Perspectives, exhibition at Julie Nester Gallery

Figurative Perspectives
Featuring Sculptures by Tor Archer and Paintings by Daniel Ochoa
Opening Reception: December 29, 5:30-8pm
DANIEL OCHOA
The evocative figurative paintings from Daniel Ochoa show an artist that is adept at translating the mood of the subject, while his use of abstraction within his process provides a veil of ambiguity and gesture.  Historically, Ochoa’s work has been heavily influenced by his experiences growing up in a bicultural and bilingual household.
Continuing to work within this perspective, Ochoa's new developments are the use of pixel emulation and writing in Spanish and English within the layers of paint. The work is about personal identity and shifting perspectives.  The plurality of the imagery is apparent as the pixel, writing, abstraction and realistic rendering coexist within the layers of paint.
