Mars Land by Artist Daniel Ochoa

This project uses programming languages javascript and php to access NASA's API and randomized text is outputted over the image. An ajax call to the API returns JSON formatted data and is sorted to pull images over 500 pixels in hight from the MAST camera on Mars Rover Curiosity. The text over the image is a result of programmatically randomizing a database of words entered by the artist. Words are in columns of various categories such as emotion, color, adjective, noun and time.

Paper Sculpture Robotics Gesture

I periodically make things with paper. The affordability of material and ability to transform a sheet of paper into larger structures makes it great to explore ideas. I have been working on some multimedia ideas with the nasa api. I watched a bunch of robotics videos about mars rovers and the state of robotics tech. These paper structures are tubes rolled around a pencil and connected with paper joints using matte medium. Dealing with tension, gravity, flexibility, gesture, in building the object. It is suspended by three strings of plastic wire. The negative spaces shift when temperature, time and probably moisture change because paper is a material that is constantly changing. The tension of the modules magnify environmental effects.

I am working with NASA's API for Mars rover curiosity to source reference photos for paintings. This page pulls images from their data base with the use of javascript and php. Some data is missing by date, but there are hundreds of photos. You can click on arrows to go up or down according the a mars day, or sol. This piece is on the first layer and 12x12in.

8 Lab recently launched a new feature called 'Wip'. Artist's can post works in progress or notes on studio practice. Here is my recent post. I don't wash my brushes, you could say lazy. But I like to substitute lazy for the word 'efficient' in this case, and I explain why.
